Postby busaboy on Mon Mar 08, 2010 3:02 pm

How many of us are on medication for anxiaty or hyperchondria itself ???

Now i am not a big fan of 'tablets' but,, i am going through a rough year so far and am considering them.

I would have never recovered from my hypochondria, anxiety and depression without SSRI's. Some hypos may recover with CBT alone, but many will need anti-depressant therapy. Anti-anxiety agents like benzodiazepines can be helpful in severe cases but often do more harm than good.

I have taken many antidepressants over the past twenty years. Some have helped more than others. What has made a life changing difference to me (and if I can get through the next couple of weeks, it will have been a year since I had a hypochondriac meltdown) is CBT. I think it is almost impossible to recover without medication, therapy, or both.

I am in CBT and take Xanax occasionally. Since I started CBT (going on 4 months now) I've definitely been taking it much less often...maybe once month. I think you specifically can definitely benefit from CBT (not just regular therapy) and anti-depressants. And possibly Xanax for those one-off really bad times.

I have been off and on SSRIs since I was 13 years old. I am now 28 and currently not on any medications, even though I'm fully aware I should be. What happens is, after days of convincing myself to even the take the meds in the first place, I'll be on an SSRI for a few months with great success. Then I will relapse and become afraid of the medication, thinking it's killing me. Medications are a huge fear of mine. I can't even take an aspirin without having a panic attack. So it's a bit counterproductive at times.
