Postby that guy » Sat Apr 21, 2007 11:28 pm

I have this weird lump it feels like a lymphnode on the left side of face on my cheek bone but it isnt on the other side. Have i got bone cancer? Are there lymhnodes in the face?

Yes there are lymph nodes in your face, and under your cheek bone. The nodes under your cheek bone drain the structures in the floor of your mouth. Normally the nodes on both cheeks will swell at the same time. You can have swelling of one without the other though. The nodes should be soft and squishy if they are inflamed due to infection, and are normally tender if swollen from infection. Non tender swellings are more ominous.

Swollen lymph nodes can be a sign of serious problems, but usually they swell up and go down on their own within 2 or 3 weeks. If the node remains swollen for more than three weeks you should have it evaluated.

If the lump is rock hard you need to get it checked soon.

I don't know of any reason why the node would lead you to believe you have bone cancer.

Well it sorta hurts and it isnt rock solid but it isnt killing me, i can move it around. I felt around and the other one on the other side is up a bit to. But i feel fine therefore i dont have an infection so it must be lymphoma or leukemia right. Ill add that my tonsils arent in the best of health and havent been for years they go on and off sometimes and ive been coughing up those hard peices of calicum from the back of my mouth. Could that cause it? Last year i was shit scared becasue the lymhnodes in my neck were up without any pain and they are still up! I had a blood test and everything was normal. I still feel fine so why are they up?

There are plenty of reasons why your lymph nodes could be swollen. Most of the reasons for lymphadenopathy are simple, and not life threatening. If they're tender it's not cancer. If they're not tender it doesn't mean it's cancer either. What symptoms of leukemia or lymphoma do you have besides these nodes?

If they stay inflamed for more than three weeks they should be evaluated.

I'm not a doctor, and even if I was one I wouldn't try to diagnose swollen lymph nodes online. I would suggest you have additional studies done to evaluate the nodes. Blood work last year doesn't mean much this year. Some people have swollen nodes which have no identifiable cause.

There is no answer to that question. You could have great blood work on Monday, and have huge problems on Friday. it all depends on what you're testing for.

From what I can tell you're worried about lymphoma or leukemia. Lymphoma is more likely to cause swollen lymph nodes as a first sign, leukemia can cause swollen lymph nodes but fatigue is the most likely first sign.

If your doctor knew that you were worried about swollen lymph nodes last year he would have probably examined you and then ordered a CBC. If the CBC showed a higher than normal level of WBC's he would have assumed infection first and may have placed you on an antibiotic course. If the nodes were still swollen three weeks after the antibiotics he or she would have probably assumed that the nodes were just a little slow to return to normal and as long as you weren't having other troublesome symptoms like fatigue, or bruising, or shortness of breath, or itching, he's do nothing more. Most doctors would have informed you that if the nodes stay swollen for a few more weeks that he'd want to see you again. Nodes swollen for more than 6 weeks with no tenderness and normal blood work would probably warrant a fine needle biopsy.

I have no idea what's causing your nodes to swell, but 6 months of swollen glands is not normal. By the way if you have been checking these nodes everyday for six months by mashing around on them, you could be the cause of your swollen nodes.

Hey all...I can so relate with the lump talk here. Alright I have had a swollen lymph glad on the right side of my neck for one whole year. Have had 3 CBC tests throughout this year and all were just fine. I asked the doc about it and he said it could just a benign swelling which is normal. I have had one on the back of my neck like all my life. So just because ur glands are swollen doesnt mean that it has to be something bad. Someone mentioned a lump on one side of their jawbone but not on the other? Thats normal too. I researched lumps on the body and some of the common ones mention were the ones on ur jaw. I'm not sure why those things are there but u can usually move them around...they are absolutely a normal thing. hope this puts some people at ease. I am not naive though...I am still about to schedule an appointment for my lump with a specialist though my blood work is fine.

Did it get infected? Does it look superficial like its just below the skin? Its moveable right? I once had a lump like that and I thought it was a lymph node. I must have had it for 2 years until it got infected and I went to my doctor. Its turns out it was a sebaceous cyst (common on the face and just about everywhere except the palms and soles) and I had it removed because of the infection but the lymph nodes surrounding it were swollen for about a month after the cyst was removed. Sebaceous cyst are relatively harmless but will grow back if not taken out properly. I wouldn't trust the CBC 100% since from what i've gathered Lymphoma does not show up in the blood like leukemia. In order for that to happen the cancer would have to have spread to the point where there are masses or is in the bone marrow where blood is made. I suggest going to your doc to have it checked if it is indeed a lymph node or a cyst.
